North Korea confirmed Monday (late Sunday U.S. time) that Kim Jong Il died Saturday morning. South Korea news agencies reported that Kim died of a heart attack during a trip. Kim was 69 and had ruled the country since his father's death in 1994, and his son Kim Jong Un is expected to take control.
South Korea was on high alert after the death, with U.S. and South Korea officials saying they believe Kim's death has increased tensions between the countries.
