Arkadelphia, Ark. —
The Arkadelphia Public Schools athletic department has announced an addition and a change to the previously-published Arkadelphia High School basketball schedule for the week of Jan. 2-7.
Added to the schedule is a non-conference matchup with Malvern slated for Tuesday, Jan. 3, at AHS. The night will begin with a junior varsity boys game at 5 p.m. with the varsity girls and the varsity boys following. Arkadelphia and Malvern faced each other in non-conference action in November at AHS and this will be the final tuneup for Arkadelphi's teams before 5A Southwest conference play begins at the end of next week.
The Malvern Lady Leopards will bring a very talented team back to Badger Gymnasium for a re-match with the Lady Badgers. The Leopard boys' team will have an entirely different look than the first time these two long-time rivals faced each other. That game was played while Malvern's football team was still in the 4A State Playoffs and many current members of the Leopard basketball team were not participating with the team yet.
The change to the schedule comes with the first conference game of the 2012 season on the schedule against Little Rock Christian. The game was originally scheduled for Friday, January 6 at AHS, but has been moved to Saturday afternoon, Jan. 7, still being played at AHS. The junior varsity boys will tip-off at 4 p.m. and will be followed by the varsity girls then the varsity boys game.
"We have a full week of home basketball next week as things get going after the Christmas break," said Arkadelphia Athletic Director Chris Babb. "Our 8th and 9th grade teams will be playing at home on Monday and Thursday and our high school teams have two home games as well, so there are plenty of chances to come support our teams."
As for the changing of the first conference games with LR Christian, officials with the two schools agreed to move the conference openers to Saturday, mainly because of the Arkansas Razorback football team playing in the AT&T Cotton Bowl on Friday night, Jan. 6th.
"We realize that not all of those who would come to the game might have an interest in the football game," said Babb. "But we acknowledge that it is a big event that night for many people and many people would probably choose to stay home and watch the football game rather than come support the Badgers and Lady Badgers.
