Fountain Lake took short lead in the game, but the Arkadelphia Lady Badgers scored six runs in the first three innings and held off a late charge to win 9-7 on Thursday afternoon at the Arkadelphia Youth Sports Park.
Fountain Lake opened the game with two runs in the top of the first inning, but Nia Nelson led off the Lady Badgers half of the inning with a walk. She moved to second when Lyndi Porter put down a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Nelson scored on a single to right field from Hannah Fennochi to make it a 2-1 game.
After holding the Lady Cobras scoreless in the top half of the second, Kamryn Thorne was hit by a pitch with one out in the bottom of the second. She stole second and went to third after Macey Green walked and Nelson reached on a slap-bunt single. Thorne scored on a passed ball and Porter walked to load the bases. Green scored when Ashlyn Taylor singled to right-center and Nelson came in on a fielder’s choice to make it 4-1 Arkadelphia.
After holding Fountain Lake scoreless again in the top of the third, Sallie Matthews led off the Lady Badgers half of the inning with a triple to the gap in right-center field. She scored on a passed ball after Onesha Steed walked. With one out, Green walked again and moved to second on a passed ball. Steed was caught stealing home and Nelson walked. Porter singled in Green to make it a 6-1 Arkadelphia lead.
After a scoreless fourth inning, Fountain Lake put up three runs in the top of the fifth inning to close the gap to 6-5.
With one out, Green walked, moved to second when Nelson singled. A two-base Fountain Lake error scored Green and moved Nelson to third base. With two outs, Taylor doubled down the third base line to bring in Nelson and Fennochi singled to left field to score Taylor to make it a 9-5 Arkadelphia lead.
Fountain Lake scored twice in the top of the sixth inning to make it 9-7, but the Lady Badgers held the Lady Cobras off in the seventh inning by turning a double-play to end the game.
