VILONIA - It took nearly two hours to get umpires to Vilonia for the Arkadelphia Badgers game on Friday night in Vilonia.
With Vilonia coaches coming across the infield to inform the Badgers that it was the umpire’s fault for not scheduling the game. The game was scheduled for a 5 p.m. start according to the schedule online by MaxPreps, but it was closer to 7 p.m. when the first pitch was thrown.
Vilonia’s team was introduced to the fans, but the Arkadelphia team was not.
Despite the delay, Vilonia fans stood behind the Arkadelphia faithful who attended the game and jeered and cheered their team with agitating annoyance. When the umpires finally showed up, neither was in the same uniform and it seemed neither knew the high school rules.
In the top of the first inning, Alec Ruble beat out an infield hit and Eric Groom laid down a perfect bunt single. Braydon Todd reached on a throwing error by the Vilonia pitcher to load the bases and Tanner Smith reached on an error by the Vilonia third baseman that scored Ruble. Groom came in on a wild pitch before the inning ended after Josh Wallace got on base by a Vilonia error.
In the bottom of the first, a mysterious balk was called on Todd. It wasn’t a balk, but the lack of knowledge about the high school rules put a Vilonia runner on base who eventually scored on a single. Todd struck out the final two batters of the inning to preserve a 2-1 Arkadelphia lead.
Neither team scored again until the bottom of the third inning when Vilonia walked, singled and scored a run when the Badgers turned a double-play. The game was tied 2-2.
River Melugin singled for Arkadelphia with two outs in the top of the fourth inning and Ruble singled. Groom walked to load the bases, but a fly ball to center field ended the threat.
Vilonia took advantage of a Badgers error with a 2-run double and a 2-run homer to lead 7-2.
Vilonia added two runs in the fifth inning to lead 9-2.
With one out in the top of the sixth, Ky Harrison walked and Melugin singled, but both runners were left on base.
In the bottom of the sixth, Vilonia added two more runs on another Badgers error. Arkadelphia did not score in the top of the seventh and lost 11-2.
