BISMARCK - The Bismarck Lady Lions scored six runs in the first inning and led 9-0 after two innings over Arkadelphia on Thursday afternoon and held off a late charge by the Lady Badgers to win a blended conference game at Lady Lions field 11-5.
Arkadelphia’s Nia Nelson opened the game with a walk and stole second base. An infield hit by Mollie Daniell put two runners on base and both moved up on a passed ball. Bismarck starting pitcher Kyndall Willis got a pop fly to second base and proceeded to strike out the next two batters to end the potential scoring threat.
The Lady Lions started off with a Willis single up the middle. Skylen Loy put down a sacrifice bunt to move Willis to second then Delilah Johnson singled to left field to put runners on the corners. Jordan Lancaster followed with a single to left field to bring in Willis and Mckenzie Efird doubled to the gap in left-center field to score Johnson and Lancaster. Cassidy Mueller walked and Keyton Goza singled to right-center to bring in Efird. A wild pitch moved up the runners and Mckenzie Wesson drew a walk. Bianca Pettus was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in Mueller and Goza scored on a fly ball to make it 6-0 Bismarck.
Willis struck out the Lady Badgers side in the top of the second inning to record five strike outs early in the game.
Johnson reached second base on an error by Arkadelphia and Lancaster singled up the middle to bring Johnson home. Another Lady Badgers error put Efird on base and a wild pitch moved the runners up a base. That set up Mueller’s single to right field to score Lancaster and Efird. Mueller moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Goza, but a pop fly to the pitcher and walk to Pettus followed. Mueller was picked off of third base to end the inning, but Bismarck led 9-0.
Nelson drew a one-out walk in the top of the third inning for Arkadelphia. After Nelson stole second a fly to center field and a fielder’s choice that got Nelson out at third base ended the potential scoring threat.
With two outs in the bottom of the third inning, Johnson singled to left field. Lancaster was hit by a pitch and Efird singled to left field to load up the bases until a grounder to third base ended the inning for Bismarck.
Arkadelphia finally got on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth inning when Hannah Fennochi doubled to left field. Lyndi Porter walked and with two outs, Onesha Steed singled to left field to score two runs. Macey Green walked, but Willis struck out the last batter. Bismarck led 9-2.
The Lady Badgers turned a double play on Bismarck in the bottom of the fourth after Goza had led off with a single.
Arkadelphia added another run in the top of the fifth when Ashlyn Taylor doubled with one out. Fennochi followed with a single to right field to bring in Taylor and Porter beat out an infield hit. Sallie Matthews walked to load the bases, but a runner was caught stealing and Willis struck out the last batter. Bismarck led 9-3.
The Lady Lions went down in order in the bottom of the fifth inning.
In the top of the sixth, Green singled to right field with one out and moved to second when Nelson was hit by a pitch. Daniell singled to left field to load the bases and Taylor singled to center to bring in Green. Fennochi singled to right field to score Nelson, but a ground out ended the top half of the inning with Bismarck leading now 9-5.
Lancaster doubled to start the bottom of the sixth inning for the Lady Lions. A ground out moved her to third base and Goza singled to left field with two outs to bring in Lancaster. Wesson reached on a two-base error that brought in Goza for an 11-5 lead.
Matthews led off the top of the seventh for Arkadelphia with a single up the middle. Her pinch runner moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and Steen walked. A runner was caught stealing home after moving to third on a passed ball and a pop fly to short stop ended the game.
