HASKELL - August McClure scored 17 points and had eight rebounds and Allie Harris scored 16 points and had five rebounds to lead the Arkadelphia Lady Badgers over the Haskell Harmony Grove Lady Cardinals 57-56 on Thursday night at Dan Henley Gymnasium in Haskell.
“It wasn’t pretty, but it was a win,” Arkadelphia Lady Badgers head basketball coach Lynn Rook said. “We tried in every way to give it back to them there at the end. It is a situation you have to learn from.”
After Harmony Grove took the initial lead of the game, Kyla Goshen scored inside for Arkadlephia. Following a Lady Cardinals turnover, McClure scored inside. Goshen put in another basket and McClure scored again inside. She added another basket before Harmony Grove closed in to 10-9 on a 3-pointer.
Hannah Fennochi came off the bench to get a offensive rebound basket and Harris sank her first 3-pointer for a 15-9 lead. Harmony Grove scored the next two baskets, but McClure put in an offensive put back with two seconds left to lift Arkadelphia to a 17-13 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Ka’brelle Stulgate made a 3-pointer and Harris scored on a baseline drive to the basket for a 22-13 lead for the Lady Badgers. Following a Harmony Grove score, Stulgate hit another basket to keep the lead at nine points.
The Lady Cardinals completed a three-point play, but Fennochi scored inside for the Lady Badgers. Harris connected on another 3-pointer for a 29-20 lead with 1:56 left in the first half. Harmony Grove made three straight free throws before Indesia Eley completed a traditional three-point play for Arkadelphia to make for a 32-23 halftime lead.
McClure and Harris scored in between a steal from Eley to start the third period and post a 36-25 lead for Arkadelphia with 6:47 left in the quarter. Harmony Grove completed a three-point play, made a 3-pointer and hit a field goal to cut the deficit to 36-33. Harris completed a three-point play for the Lady Badgers, but the Lady Cardinals came back to score six straight points to tie the game at 39-39 by the end of the third quarter.
Stulgate made a 3-pointer for Arkadelphia after Goshen battled for an offensive rebound, but the Lady Cardinals answered with a 3-pointer. Goshen scored inside and Harris added a free throw. McClure completed a three-point play for a 48-44 Arkadelphia lead with 4:57 to play.
McClure scored two straight baskets for a 52-44 lead with 2:41 left, but Harmony Grove hit a field goal and made two free throws before Harris scored for the Lady Badgers. The Lady Cardinals got a 3-pointer to fall to cut the Arkadelphia lead to 54-51 with one minute to go.
Eley made a free throw with 45 seconds remaining and added two more free throws with 21 seconds left to put the Lady Badgers up 57-51. Harmony Grove got a field goal and a forced a turnover that resulted a 3-pointer at the buzzer to close the gap to one point.
“Our defense was non-existent tonight,” Rook said. “Harmony Grove shot the ball extremely well. When you get up by 18 points, you have to know what to do and take care of the basketball. You have to end the game, instead of extending it.”
The Lady Badgers broke a two-game losing streak with the victory. Along with McClure and Harris, Stulgate finished with eight points, Goshen and Eley both had six point each, while Fennochi had four points.
