TEXARKANA - Persistence was one of the descriptive terms that Gurdon head coach David Davis used to describe his Go-Devils after they clinched a regional tournament berth by defeating the Fouke Panthers 46-41 on Tuesday night at Genoa Central High School in the quarterfinals of the 7-3A district tournament.
“This group refuses to give in regardless of the circumstances,” Davis said.
The success of the Go-Devils came from a 20-point performance from BJ Brewer and 15 points from Cameron Gulley, but the rest of the team contributed in some way to the win. KJ Tidwell, who finished with seven points, had a basket and made one of two free throws in the first quarter against Fouke. Gulley put in a basket and Brewer made three of four free throws. Meanwhile, the Go-Devils defense only allowed six points to the Panthers and led 8-6 by the end of the first period.
Brewer made four field goals, Gulley made a 3-pointer and a basket and Tidwell put in a field goal as the Go-Devils outscored Fouke 15-13 in the second period to edge out to a 23-19 halftime lead.
Kagon Morrison put in a basket, Brewer added two field goals and completed a three-point play and Gulley made two baskets as Gurdon outscore Fouke 13-10 in the third quarter to up its lead to seven points, 36-29.
Fouke tried to come back in the fourth quarter and fouled to extend the game. Tidwell made two free throws, Gulley had a basket and two free throws, Brewer made two of four free throws and Isaiah Harper put in a basket as the Go-Devils held off the Panthers in the late minutes of the game.
“The other district is loaded, so we will have our work cut out for us,” Davis said of the regional tournament berth. “We’ve been living this way all season tough. Tough competition is nothing new for this crew. It will take some luck to get to the state tournament, but at this point, I wouldn’t put anything past them.”
Gurdon played Centerpoint on Thursday night in the district semifinals.
