Martha Jane Hopper, 74, of Arkadelphia, went to sleep in the Lord on Thursday, June 25, 2009.
She was born on Sept. 20, 1934, in Junction City, the daughter of Mack Hopper and Viola Tackett Hopper. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her sister, Ann Hopper.
After raising three young men she decided to go back to school and she graduated with two degrees from Henderson State University. She received a master’s degree in social work and she became a loving and caring social worker when she graduated. For the past 13 years she worked at Group Living, Inc., where she cared for her long-term roommate and dear friend, Janie Fields. Janie was her favorite part of Group Living. She was a devout and dedicated member of Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Arkadelphia.
She is survived by her three sons and their spouses, Paul and Mary Cantrell of Little Rock, Marty and Bridget Cantrell of Caddo Gap and Jeff and Alicia Cantrell of Madison, Miss.; and three grandchildren, Allee and Aaron Cantrell of Madison, Miss. and Brennan Taylor of Oakland, Calif.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m., Monday, June 29, at Saint Mary’s Catholic Church in Arkadelphia with the Rev. Linus Ukomado officiating.
Interment will be in the Hopper Cemetery under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Glenwood.
Pallbearers were Tony Smith, Steve Spakes, Stacy Watson, Roger Oblander, Chris “Topher” Warren and Tom Amen.
