The STAND Foundation, Inc., held its first meeting in Arkadelphia in April.
According to a press release from the agency, “Select citizens of the Arkadelphia community began participation in their first leadership session” on April 23.
Those addressing the first class were Mayor Chuck Hollingshead, City Manager; Jimmy Bolt and New Futures for Youth Director; Mark Perry, Ph.D. Guest speakers for the day include Pastor Earnest Thomas of St. Mark Baptist Church in Little Rock and Logan Hampton, Jr., Ed.D. of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock.
The STAND Foundation, Inc. is a nonprofit corporation that empowers individuals and organizations through leadership training that promotes economic opportunities, social progress and community development. The Edward Coleman Leadership Institute, the first public initiative of the organization, focuses on building leadership skills through training in the areas of personal, professional and pure leadership development. The program is statewide and open to adults 20 and older. In addition to Arkadelphia, training sites are in Little Rock, El Dorado and Pine Bluff. Participants of the inaugural classes of the leadership program graduated in June 2009.
"You can't build up a community if you don't lift up its people," said Tracy Steele, chief executive officer for The STAND Foundation. “Individuals who participate in and complete our program are better prepared to have a positive impact in their homes, on their jobs and throughout their communities,” he said. “Program results from STAND graduates indicate a higher performance in leadership, a stronger desire to achieve and a dedicated focus toward community service projects.”
The Edward Coleman Leadership Institute includes STAND-Net, Internet-based training that occurs between the four scheduled training sessions, various assessments and activities to identify participant growth and progression, and the development of a community service project plan. After the one-year training, business professionals and alumni will mentor participants online and encourage completion and implementation of their community service projects.
