Arkadelphia, Ark. -

One shot was fired on a Ouachita State Baptist University parking lot Wednesday afternoon near Henderson State University’s Newberry Hall, according to Sgt. Harley Hillery, criminal investigator for the Arkadelphia Police Department.

The intended victim was not shot or injured. Police made three arrests in connection with the shooting. Brandon Yarbrough, 23, of Memphis, Tenn., who allegedly fired the shot, was arrested by Caddo Valley police. Yarbrough and the other two were allegedly waiting in the parking lot for the intended victim to return to the Henderson dormitory. Al Harris, police chief, said the intended victim’s ex-girlfriend was one of those arrested.

Officers also recovered a .380-caliber, semi-automatic, handgun. At press time, all three face charges of aggravated assault. Yarbrough is also charged with discharging a firearm from a vehicle.

The names of the other two suspects were not released at press time.

Criminal investigators are “still trying to put it all together,” Hillery said Thursday. “There’s going to be a lot more to it than what the original information was.”

OBU President Rex Horne e-mailed a statement to Ouachita students, parents, faculty and staff regarding the situation. He said university officials “have asked campus safety to provide an increased presence in the area for the next several days.”

Keldon Henley, dean at Ouachita, said administrators chose to use e-mail and the OBU Web site to inform the campus community rather than activate the campus emergency alert system “because the individuals involved were already apprehended when Ouachita was informed of the shooting.”

According to a press release from Henderson, university police also responded to the incident, and the suspects were apprehended “in a matter of minutes.” Henderson faculty, staff and students also received an  e-mail letting them know the suspects had been arrested. Since the incident happened off of Henderson’s campus, HSU President Charles Welch said the APD has jurisdiction on the investigation.

Welch said he wanted to “reassure faculty, staff, students and the community that the campus is safe.” He also commended the Arkadelphia and university police for their “excellent response.”
