The Arkadelphia Parks and Recreation Center will be giving away 500 trees on Arbor Day, Thursday. Arkadelphia is one of 53 Tree City USA sites.

Starting at 10 a.m., the trees will be available to the public to come pick up and plant. Trees are on a first come first serve basis. There will be 200 Cherry Oak and 100 of each Red Mulberry, Saw Tooth Oak and Willow Oak.

The Arkansas Forestry Commission will be there to assist people in how and where to plant the trees. The trees can be planted anywhere in the community.

At 4 p.m., Mayor Chuck Hollingshead will read a proclamation. Officials will also dedicate a tree in memory to former board member Patsy Harris. Also, they will officially open a mountain bike course located off Feaster Trail. Along the course, there will be identification trees to help people learn the different types of trees.

The Boy Scout Troop 75 will be there to help plant trees in the park. They will take part in a tree planting demonstration where the Forestry Commission will help them.

“We are planting trees for the future,” Arkadelphia Parks and Recreation Director Rick Brumley said. “It is important that we plant new trees to replace the older ones that are dying and to have a new base of trees for the next generation.”

Arkadelphia is starting its third year as a Tree City USA site. Last year the department gave out all of its 400 trees.
