A total of 42 ribbons were tied to light poles and area businesses to encourage the public’s support of Relay for Life, an event in which local teams and individuals walk, jog or run the track in Henderson’s Carpenter-Haygood Stadium to raise money for cancer survivors and research. “It’s a celebration for cancer survivors,” Naples said of the event, which is scheduled for April 23 from 6 p.m. until 6 a.m. This year’s theme is “Rock and Roll All Night” because “cancer never sleeps.” Event participants remain at the event until dawn because, Naples said, the rising sun symbolizes hope for patients and families fighting cancer. Other Relay for Life volunteers Kim Vrba and event chair Blake Campbell joined Naples for the ribbon-tying activity. A total of 24 teams so far have registered locally for the event. Teams are organizing several fundraising events for Relay for Life. This Friday evening, the City Slickers have organized a Mixed Martial Arts professional fighting event at the Arkadelphia Recreation Center. Tickets are on sale and can be purchased through Rendi Currey at 246-9864 or at the Arkadelphia Area Chamber of Commerce at 246-1460.
