The Arkansas ACT Council awarded Arkadelphia High School with the 2009 College Readiness Award for the school’s increasing number of students taking the ACT Assessment over the past five years — and “significantly increasing their level of achievement and college readiness,” according to a press release from the ACT Southwest Regional Office in Austin, Texas.
The Arkansas ACT Council is comprised of secondary and postsecondary educators who advise ACT, Inc., on the use of ACT programs and services in Arkansas schools and colleges. ACT, Inc., is a not-for-profit organization that provides assessment, research, information and program management services in the braod areas of education and workforce development and the publisher of the ACT Assessment.
The ACT Assessment is the cllege admissions test that is used and accepted by all colleges natinowide and throughout Arkansas. In 2009, over 70 percent of students in the state took the ACT, which is the predominant college admissions and readiness achievement test in Arkansas.
According to Karen L. Pennell, assistant vice president and ACT Southwest Regional manager, the Arkansas ACT Council “wanted to recognize those Arkansas high schools that have made significant strides in increasing the college readiness of their graduates as demonstrated by their ACT score increases over the past five years.
“This can only happen as a result of the high school’s faculty and staff efforts and the dedication of AHS students and parents to focus on college readiness and raise the level of college readiness for all students.”
Less than 10 percent of all high schools in the state were honored for the accomplishment.
Other high schools that received the award include: Batesville, Brinkley, Crossett, Elkins, Farmington, Fouke, Gravette, Gurdon, Hazen, Horatio, Lake Hamilton, Huntsville, Lamar, Glen Rose, Mammoth Spring, Mansfield, McGehee, Acorn, Ozark, Pangburn, Pea Ridge, Perryville, Poyen, Prairie Grove, Prescott, Rison, Salem, Van Buren, Vilonia, West Fork, Wynne, Fayetteville Senior High School, Union Christian Academy in Fort Smith, Ozark Adventist Academy in Gentry, Pulaski Academy in Little Rock, Little Rock Christian Academy in Little Rock, and Shiloh Christian School in Springdale.
