Victor Lord Oliver, PhD, 92, of Bismarck died peacefully in hospice care on Monday, August 6, 2018.
Dr. Oliver was born in St. Joseph, Louisiana on August 31, 1925. He spent most of his childhood and graduated from high school in Wilmot, Arkansas. There he met Billie Kathryn Englerth who became his wife of 72 years.
Oliver enlisted in the United States Navy and served as a Underwater Demolition Team Frogmen, the early Navy SEAL program. He was a World War II veteran of valor. His military service was a great honor of his life.
Following WWII, Oliver graduated from Ouachita Baptist University and went on to graduate work at Peabody College of Vanderbilt University, and later the University of Alabama where he completed doctoral research at Dauphin Island, Ala. His university teaching career included several universities, and he retired in 1988 after many years as chairman of the Department of Biology at Ouachita Baptist University. He was a dedicated educator, mentor, and scholar.
Oliver is predeceased by his father, Victor LeRoy Oliver; mother, Katsie Lord Oliver; adult daughter, Toni Claudette Oliver; and sister Lenoir Oliver Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Billie Kathryn Englerth Oliver; one daughter, Victoria Kathleen Oliver Helm and her husband Jack Gaines of Dauphin Island, Alabama; one grandson, Danny Patterson Simms, II and his wife, Mona Morman Simms, and their sons Charles Parker Simms and Austin Patterson Simms of Bismarck, Arkansas; one granddaughter, Katherine Simms Berry and her husband Conrid Clyde “Trey” Berry, III and their son Bennett Tanner Berry and daughter Berkeley TaiMei Berry of Magnolia, Arkansas; and sister Betty Jo Oliver Grant and her husband Dr. Daniel R. Grant of Arkadelphia, Arkansas; and many cousins spanning four generations.
Following cremation, a private family burial will be conducted with full military honors. Interment will be at the Wilmot Cemetery in Wilmot, Arkansas. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Heifer International, Inc., Arkansas Hospice, or the charity of your choice.
