Both the Arkadelphia Badgers and Joe T. Robinson Senators proved why they were both undefeated coming into Friday night’s contest.
LITTLE ROCK - Both the Arkadelphia Badgers and Joe T. Robinson Senators proved why they were both undefeated coming into Friday night’s contest.
But when the smoke cleared, it was the Senators handing the Badgers their first overall and conference loss of the season following a 21-17 decision.
Robinson improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in conference action, while Arkadelphia fell to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
The Badgers were playing without the services of junior running back Zion Hatley who sustained an injury during the Nashville game.
After a scoreless first quarter, middle linebacker Kyren Harrison managed to intercept a Robinson pass and return the ball just short of the end zone. Quarterback Cannon Turner scored a touchdown and Gabe Goodman’s PAT was good to put the Badgers ahead 7-0 with 10:12 remaining in the half.
Robinson’s Nathan Page received the ball at the Senator’s 5 yard line. A face mask penalty against Arkadelphia gave Robinson extra yardage.
Running back Zaytron Waits was stopped by De’Marco Britton at the 33 yard line. Waits added two more yards to bring up a 3rd-and-6. The Senators decided to punt following an incomplete pass.
Arkadelphia’s Dillion Scott caught the ball at the Badger 29. Turner racked up five more yards before being stopped by Waits. He was then stopped by Robinson’s Ceazar Warren at the 35 to bring up a 3rd-and-4.
Logan Lucas was stopped by Warren at the 40, but not before racking up enough yards to give the Badgers a first down.
After several attempts to advance the ball, the Badgers got some assistance thanks to an offsides penalty on the part of the Senators to move the ball to 44 and bring up a 3rd-and-5. Lucas was tripped up by Page at the 47 and Arkadelphia punted the ball to the Robinson.
The Senators got on the board when Warren rushed 42 yards down the field into the end zone with 2:10 remaining in the period. Trent Eskola’s kick was good to tie the game at 7 apiece.
Robinson received the ball to start the third quarter of play. Again, Warren managed to find a hole down the field and rush 60 yards into the end zone. Eskola’s kick was good to put the Senators up 14-7 with 10:58 remaining in the third quarter.
Both teams spent most of the third period punting to one another as neither teams could advance the ball into the end zone.The Badgers could not connect on a field goal after bringing up a 4th and 9 and the Senators took over at their own 20 at
Arkadelphia got a big break when they recovered a Robinson fumble at the 7 yard line. Turner scored a touchdown and Goodman’s PAT was good to tie the game at 14 with 4:46 remaining.
The Senators took over at the 10 yard line. A penalty for blocking in the back pushed Robinson further back. The Badgers recovered another Senator fumble at the 10 yard line.
Arkadelphia managed to advance the ball far enough to get in field goal range. Goodman’s field goal from 23 yards out went through the upright to give Arkadelphia 17-14 cushion with 3:26 remaining in the third quarter.
The Senators received the ball to start the fourth quarter. Warren toted the ball 12 yards to the 27 yard line to bring up a 1st down. Warren brought the ball to the 19 to bring up a 2nd-and-2.
The Badgers eventually got the ball at the 20 after the ball rolled into the end zone for a touchback. Turner advanced the ball 16 yards to the 36.
Scott was stopped by Robinson’s Shumar Blair at the 39 yard line to bring up 2nd and 7. Alec Lewis was brought down at the Senator 39 and Turner was sacked by Davis Wofford to bring up 2nd and 17. An incomplete pass brought up 3rd and 17 for the Badgers.
The Badgers decided to put the ball in the air. The ball was intercepted by Robinson’s Courtney Snelling at the 4 yard line.
After several attempts, Warren managed to get a first down when he advanced the ball to the 15 yard line. The Senators continued to move the ball down the field and eventually scored on a touchdown from Traveon James from 10 yards out. Eskola’s kick was good to put Robinson up 21-17 with 2:10 remaining in the game.
The Badgers would not quit as Carson Smith moved the ball to the 28 yard line. Lucas broke free to the Robinson 44. Turner advanced the ball to bring up a 2nd and 8 from the 42, before an incomplete pass brought up 3rd and 8.
A penalty against Robinson for pass interference moved the ball to the 27 yard line. Passes intended for Lewis and Alec Rubble were incomplete as the Badgers with faced with 3rd and 10.
An interception with 1:12 remaining sealed the game for the Senators.
Arkadelphia will look to bounce back this Friday at home during homecoming against the Fountain Lake Cobras who are coming off a 65-28 loss to Nashville Friday night. Kickoff from Badger Stadium is at 7 p.m.
