The step for a new city manger for the City of Arkadelphia continued Tuesday with a review of several applications for the position.
Directors spent approximately 90 minutes in executive session and reviewed a total of 10 resumes for the position. The board recently narrowed its list down its list of 64 total applicants to 26 for serious consideration.
Prior to calling the meeting to executive session, the board addressed the salary for the position.
Directors recently asked Acting City Manager Brenda Gills to include in the budget for the upcoming year a salary for the city manager.
Gills budgeted a maximum salary of $100,000 annually. The salary does not include benefits, such as insurance, retirement or a car allowance.
Calhoun said the salary for the city manager could be compared to that of a school superintendent.
"Certainly we're not able to pay a salary like our local school superintendent," said Calhoun.
According to Calhoun, the salary alone for area superintendents ranged from $93,000 to $140,000 annually.
"That gives you an idea of what we are looking at in administrative positions in this area," Calhoun said.
Gills said the $100,000 salary could be increased, but noted other cuts to the budget would have to be made. Gills also noted the board does not have to make an initial offer of $100,000 to the candidate.
The board has announced plans of meeting again before the end of the year to review the remaining 16 applications.
