It was not a fair fight as the Lady Panthers of Magnolia came to town Monday night to face off against the Goza Lady Beavers, and the home team walked away with a 24-7 win.
It was a defensive battle by both teams throughout, and the Lady Beavers got off to an early start, picking up a 6-4 lead in the opening period.
The second period left Magnolia scoreless as the Lady Beavers were held to only three points in the period for a 9-4 lead at the half.
The Lady Beavers were again held to a mere three points in the third as they again blanked the visiting team, 12-4, and Arkadelphia put up 12 in the fourth to secure the win, 24-7.
Victoria Lewis led the Lady Beavers with seven points, and Logan Oestreich had six.
Kaitlyn Williams added three, and Autumn Bailey, Kyauna Crawford, Cassidy Witherspoon and Myesha Brown each put up two.
“I’m so proud of these girls,” said head coach Butch Alexander. “They understand why defense is so important. We could not buy a bucket in the first three quarters, but because the girls kept the pressure up on the defense, we held Magnolia to four points the first three quarters. Finally, some shots started falling in the fourth, and we were able to score enough to back off the pressure.”
The Lady Beavers advance to 8-4 with the win.
“Eight wins is the most for any Goza team since sometime before 2003,” Alexander explained.
The Lady Beavers will wrap up their season Saturday morning as they travel to Malvern. Tip-off will follow the seventh grade girls game which starts at 9 a.m.
