The Arkansas Blue Cross and Blue Shield magazine, Blue and You, suggests that you set small challenges for yourself such as; eat one piece of fruit each day, drink one less soda per day, go for a 30-minute walk daily, clear your mind and breathe easy for five minutes and don't go back for second helpings at mealtime. Achieving small goals can have a big effect on your bottom line over the span of a year. Start small and build on those successes.
So consider your possibilities and check with your doctor before beginning an exercise plan. Who knows, 2014 may just be the year for you to start feeling better.
  • Chair yoga is for beginners, people with limited mobility and those with physical challenges. The yoga is performed on a mat and with a chair. The chair is used for balance in standing poses and the chair is also used for sitting in modified poses. The chair yoga class begins at 3 p.m.
Regular yoga is for people with normal physical capabilities. The class begins at 4:30 p.m. If you do not have your own yoga mat, one will be provided for you.
No previous knowledge of yoga is needed to attend. The instructors, Linda Bullard and Emily Russell are both very good at teaching beginners and at making you feel capable and welcome.
At the end of each class there is a short time of quiet relaxation and meditation. When you leave Gurdon Yoga you will feel a renewed sense of peace and look forward to the next session.
Another way to become healthier in 2014 involves fresh air and the great outdoors. The Gurdon Walking Trail is a one quarter mile paved walkway that circles through a grove of oak trees located near the corner of Walnut and 10th Street. The parking area is on Walnut just east of Tenth. The trail is smooth, level and scenic, featuring many trees, birds and squirrels.
Physical activity is good for your mind and your body and according to the U.S. Government Weight-Control Information Network being overweight can cause serious health problems including; diabetes, heart dieses, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, gall bladder disease, some types of cancer, osteoarthritis and sleep apnea.
