  • An Arkadelphia man has been indicted on five counts of rape. Court records indicate that 19-year-old Cory James Smith, of 816 Wade St., allegedly raped a juvenile five times in two years. Sgt. Jason "Shorty" Jackson, criminal investigator with the Arkadelphia Police Department, said the investigation is "ongoing" in the matter, and that the case was opened in December after the victim reported Smith had raped her. An affidavit filed with Clark County Prosecutor Blake Batson alleges that Smith "forced [the victim] to perform sexual acts against her will" and that he "threatened her numerous times to force her compliance." Smith, who remains in custody at the Clark County Detention Center, was arrested on Dec. 12. He admitted to "numerous counts" of rape, according to the affidavit. Agencies involved in the investigation include APD, Department of Human Services, Arkansas State Police Crimes Against Children Division and Clark County Juvenile Services. Smith is being held on a $150,000 bond. Upon posting bond, he will be required to wear an electronic ankle monitor. If convicted, he could face 10-40 years or life in prison on each count against him.
