  • Taking a step back in time at Historic Washington State Park not only includes the working 19th Century Arkansas village venue but the lifestyle that went with the era through workshops and classes offered at the park. The 2014 schedule begins Jan. 18 with a Basic Dutch Oven Cooking Workshop, according to Patricia Thomas, marketing officer at HWSP. “Discover the methods and secrets of successful Dutch oven cooking that early residents of Washington would have used,” Thomas noted. Classes are limited to 10 participants, with a minimum of six, and a 36 hour cancellation deadline, she said. And, reservations are required by contacting 870-983-2684. The class will be conducted from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. and registration is $25 per person, Thomas said. “Dutch ovens are available for sale in the gift shop if you wish to purchase one after the workshop,” she said. “French and Creole cooking wil be the feature at this workshop.” Go beyond the basics of Dutch oven cooking in an advanced workshop on Feb. 1 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. “This half-day, hands-on workshop is for folks who already understand the art of Dutch oven cooking,” Thomas said. Registration is $25 per person, with a minimum class of six and maximum of 10, she said. Put on your dancing shoes for Dancing with the Stars Washington Style on Jan. 25 from 7-10 p.m. “Throughout history, dance has been not only an art form but a way to socialize and make new friends,” Thomas said. “Come alone or with a partner and you will leave with new friends and a new knowledge of dances such as the Virginia Reel, and many more.” Registration is $18 for couples and $10 for individuals and the class will be conducted at the WPA-era Gymnasium at the park. A minimum of six participants is required for the class, and casual or period dress are both welcomed. Refreshments will be served, Thomas said. Registration is available by calling 870-983-2684.
