“You better watch out, you better not cry. You better not pout, I'm telling you why, Santa Claus is coming to town.” -- For most of you I know this tune sounds familiar. However, parents everywhere use this Christmas song as an incentive for their children to be extra good during the Christmas season. Moreover, the songwriter makes it clear that receiving a gift is totally based upon being good or bad. I am very grateful that God doesn’t use the Santa Claus approach. He does not give gifts according to our performance or behavior. If that being so, we all would be in a bad predicament. The Apostle Paul writes, “For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so also by one man’s obedience, many will be made righteous.” (Romans5:19) You are declared righteous because you’ve been raised up together with Jesus, through faith. In the same way that you previously inherited sin, you have inherited righteousness. Even when you do “bad” you are still righteous. Even, when you do “good” you are still a sinner. It’s been given to you as a gift. My friend, it is a true fact that God knows everything about you. He sees you when you’re sleeping, and He sees you when you’re awake. We are also told that “His eyes are in every place, keeping watch on the evil and the good.” (Psalm 15:3) And yes, you may mess up and fall short every day, but His grace is much greater. And even at your very best, you can never be justified by your own merits; “For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God, and are justified by His grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus” (Romans 3:23). So, please don’t mistake God to be Santa Claus. He doesn’t make a list and checks it twice –to see whether you’ve been naughty or nice.
