Siftings staffers earn awards for excellence in community journalism.

Siftings Herald staffers took five awards at the annual Arkansas Press Association convention held this weekend in Eureka Springs.

Features editor Joe Phelps won first and second place for in-depth reporting. Phelps’ won for the series of stories about the deaths of a local couple and the questions that arose following their deaths about the local 911 system.

Phelps’ second place win was for the stories about “Operation Ice Pick” in which a group of meth dealers were arrested in Gurdon.

Phelps also won third place for beat reporting.

Sports editor James Leigh won third place for his feature story about the changing landscape of sports.

Editor Wendy Ledbetter took a first place win for headline writing. The headline, “A ‘fowl’ situation,” was referring to a chicken truck that wrecked near Amity.

Ledbetter also took first place for a humor column titled “Catching turkeys.”
