Jean Eason presented cash awards to students at Peake Middle School for essays concerning shoplifting in 1983. LeAnn Breedlove won first place, Judie Hunter won second place and Stephanie Gravett took third place. The first place award was $5, second place $2.50 and third place $1.25. The essays entitled "Why I feel that shoplifting is a crime, and people should be punished for committing this crime," were judged on originality, neatness, thoroughness, grammar, and knowledge. The contest was sponsored by the DECA club at Arkadelphia High School.
