Local officials have confirmed that a South Fork area man died in a fire at his home Monday night.
Okolona, Hollywood and Gurdon Fire Departments responded to a house fire Monday evening at a home located at 2596 Highway 53 North near the South Fork Truck Stop. The property belongs to Elmer Lee Wells, age 85.
According to Clark County Sheriff Jason Watson, the call came in at about 6:48 p.m. when passers by noticed smoke coming from the area of the residence. When Okolona and Hollywood arrived at the scene the home was fully engulfed in flames.
Gurdon Fire Chief Robert Burns said his department was called in around 8 p.m. to assist with water.
The home, described as a split level structure, had a basement and a separate level over the garage.
Okolona Mayor and Fireman Jim Cox said, "That basement acted as a fire pit and we just couldn't pour enough water into it."
He also said the smoke and steam emanating from the blaze was intense.
The home was located at the end of a long and hilly driveway and responding vehicles had some degree of difficulty reaching the fire.
The body of the victim was recovered this morning.
There has been no word at press time as to the cause of the fire.
