Chamber of Commerce sponsored event to recognize city’s top citizens

The Best of DeWitt and meeting, sponsored by the DeWitt Chamber of Commerce, will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 31, in the cafeteria at DeWitt High School.

The meeting and the announcement of the Best of DeWitt awards are an annual event that has been the highlight of the first of the year for the Dewitt Chamber of Commerce.

"We have been announcing the Best of DeWitt Awards for years," Vivian Meins, secretary of the chamber, said. "Everyone seems to enjoy them very much."

Meins said the DeWitt Chamber of Commerce sponsors the Christmas on the Square festivities in December of each year and awards two $600 scholarships to deserving students in the DeWitt area.

"The scholarships are in honor of Bill Rasco to attend the PCCUA campus in DeWitt," Meins said. "The other scholarship is in honor of Wilbur Botts to a student attending the college of their choice."

Meins said each year the chamber selects a speaker for the annual event and this year the speaker will be announced at a date closer to the event.

Other than Citizen of the Year, the other awards to be presented are:  Best Employee, Best Educator, Civil Servant of the Year and Good Neighbor of the Year.
The officers of the DeWitt Chamber of Commerce for the upcoming year are Kirk Vansandt, president; Carolyn Turner, vice president,; Vivian Meins, secretary; and Kayleen Cunningham, treasurer.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased from any DeWitt Chamber of Commerce member.
