Because of weekend thunderstorms, the Rolling for Taliyah memorial dice run was rescheduled.
The event is scheduled to instead take place Saturday, Aug. 25, at Feaster Park.
Proceeds from the Rolling for Taliyah memorial dice run will help offset funeral costs for the late Taliyah McGhee, 10, of Donaldson. McGhee was killed July 12 on a Mississippi interstate highway when the vehicle she was riding in rolled over.
Funds raised from the event will also offset medical costs for McGhee's older sister, Paige Matthews, who was injured in the accident.
Event coordinator and family friend Kristie Wilson said some showed up this weekend despite the heavy rains, and that she received "several phone calls" inquiring whether the event was still going on.
Wilson explained what a "dice run" is. "It's a lot like a poker run," Wilson said, noting that participants are given a map of places to stop. At each stop, the driver rolls a pair of dice. At the end of the run, the person with the best hand wins.
"When they get back, whoever has the highest score and the lowest score will get a percentage of what they paid in for registration," Wilson said. "The rest goes to Taliyah's family."
And while the event is geared mainly toward motorcycles, Wilson said the event is open to vehicles with two, three or four wheels.
The dice run will begin at Arkadelphia's Feaster Park, and designated stops will be in Caddo Valley, Hot Springs, Malvern and Friendship before returning to Feaster Park for a lunch of grilled hot dogs.
The event will also include a raffle, children's activities and possibly live music. There will be face painting and hair chalks for children.
The cost is $15 per rider/hand (the first rider includes lunch), and $5 for each additional hand. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m., and the first rider will leave at 9 a.m. The last rider out will be at 11 a.m., and last rider in will be 2:30 p.m.
Considering the large number of participants who planned to attend this weekend's event, Wilson said she expects there to be a good turnout for the rescheduled run. "Before it got rained out, there were supposed to be 300 coming out that we knew of," Wilson said. "And those were just the ones on [the event's Facebook page]. We had a lot of groups coming, also."
