  • A 10-year-old was doing “remarkably well” in a Little Rock hospital Tuesday after accidentally being shot in the stomach Friday, Arkadelphia police said.
According to Sgt. Roy Bethell, criminal investigator for the Arkadelphia Police Department, officers were called Friday at 9:10 p.m. to a North 12th Street residence in reference to the shooting, which police have ruled accidental.
Bethell said the victim’s juvenile brother was cleaning a 20-gauge shotgun he thought was unloaded when it accidentally discharged, penetrating a door the victim was about to enter and hitting the victim in the stomach.
The victim was taken by ambulance to Baptist Health Medical Center-Arkadelphia, where he was stabilized before being taken by helicopter to Arkansas Children’s Hospital, according to Bethell.
At first, the victim’s condition was listed as critical, but after surgery at ACH, the condition was no longer life-threatening, Bethell said.
“As of Monday, he was doing remarkable, exceeding doctors’ expectations.”
Bethell added that it was a “miracle that his injuries were no more extensive than they were, and I credit a lot of that to BHMCA ambulance personnel and hospital personnel, as well as the Arkansas Children’s Hospital staff.”
